The electronic cigarette has received increased media coverage since the FDA released its report on the product in 2009. More tobacco smokers, concerned about the negative health effects associated with traditional cigarettes and interested in new ways to deliver nicotine, are researching the safety of electronic cigarettes. In response to the FDA’s report, the American Association of Public Health Physicians (AAPHP) has released several favorable reports on public use of the electronic cigarette.

Electronic cigarettes, commonly referred to as e-cigarettes, are battery operated atomizers. Nicotine solution is inserted into a tube that looks similar to a cigarette. When the user drags on the tube, the atomizer evaporates the solution. The user inhales the evaporated solution, which accounts for the nicotine delivery, and then exhales a visible cloud, similar in appearance to smoke. Since the electronic cigarette does not include combustible materials, no actual smoke is created.

The health risks associated with smoking traditional cigarettes occur due to the inhalation of burning tobacco. The nicotine found in tobacco does not pose risk of cancer or other respiratory diseases. The byproducts of burning tobacco drawn into the lungs are what cause those conditions. Nicotine users who substitute an electronic cigarette for a traditional cigarette immediately reduce their risk of developing respiratory disease due to their limiting the intake of harmful tobacco byproducts. The AAPHP suggests that electronic cigarettes can help lead to a decline of up to 99% of tobacco related diseases among users who cannot quit or who do not want to quit. This decline can occur due to the absence of burning tobacco.

In addition to the immediate health benefits for the user, electronic cigarettes pose little to no danger to non-smokers, unlike the negative health effects associated with second hand smoke. The vapor cloud released by an electronic cigarette user is created by propylene glycol, which is found in many common products including several pharmaceuticals, toothpaste, deodorant and saline solutions. In addition, propylene glycol is used to create smoke in fog machines. The AAPHP suggests use of the electronic cigarette indoors likely poses less than 1% of the risk of traditional cigarettes to others in the room, but concedes studies should be conducted to find the true risk.

The electronic cigarette has not yet enjoyed the same success as traditional cigarettes, but the number of users is growing as information about the reduced health risks of the product is released to the public. By reducing the amount of inhaled byproducts of burning tobacco, smokers decrease their chance of developing respiratory diseases. In addition, the reduced risk of second hand smoke ingestion to non-smokers makes the electronic cigarette a viable alternative to traditional cigarettes.

With the increasing buzz surrounding the electronic cigarette, there are increasing investigations into its value and whether it is too good to be true. There is not much empirical evidence available and so there are many tests being carried out on the product as I type. The retailers and manufacturers of the electronic cigarette have been quick to promote it and advertise its many positives but as we all should know, they really have no incentive to make any negatives known and they even may not know that negatives exist.

Some of the features of the electronic cigarette are that it has no tobacco and thus no tobacco smoke (therefore no second-hand smoke) but emits a vapor instead which leaves no smell on one’s breath or clothes, it has no tar, no carcinogens and is cost-effective. Another important highlight is the nicotine regulation feature. The user has the ability to regulate the level of nicotine that he/she consumes and can even acquire a cartridge that contains no nicotine. Now after considering all of the above, don’t you think that if one smokes an electronic cigarette and opts for a zero nicotine cartridge that it would be totally safe? Well let us see.

In actuality, there is no foolproof evidence that there is any health problem associated with the electronic cigarette with zero nicotine. The only established problem with electronic cigarettes stems from dangers presented by the nicotine additive. Propylene glycol, the substance that creates the vapor in the electronic cigarette, is used in food coloring and as smoke for on-stage plays and other performances thus it is perfectly safe.

The Food and Drug Administration of the U.S.A. did issue a report namely the ‘Evaluation of e-cigarettes’ which expressed many doubts about the ‘supposed’ safety of the electronic cigarette. Njoy, one of the primary manufacturing companies of the electronic cigarette, came out in defense of their product seeking to dispel the ‘false accusations made by the FDA in its report. There was even a technical review and analysis of the electronic cigarette done by Exponent® to show the flaws in the report.

So the arguments and battles continue to be waged, but in the meantime the electronic cigar or cigarette is perfectly legal and available for public consumption and there has been no sound proof that it causes any health problem when it is not used with nicotine.

In U.S. and all western countries, the oral care starts from the age of a child where the primary teeth and their care decide the development of the permanent teeth later. But the care of teeth by children is not easy, until they are trained to do so. For that reason, the dentists in U.S. have a program through which they provide dental care to the children there for free, once every year.

Many dentists take part in this program, and it’s co-ordinated by American Dental Association, and every state branch has its participation in it. It’s called “Give Kids a Smile” program and going to be conducted on Feb 5th, 2010 but ADA is seeking ways and support to extend this program to more than just a day. This program is done every year on the first Friday in the month of February, and the dental team members provide the free dental check-up and care to children from low-income families all across the country.

Selected dental clinicians provide this free dental care as a part of this program, so you can check all the places and clinics nearest to your location by checking ADA site.

There are few sites that provide all the information about free dental work, and inform about any upcoming dental care events.

For the year 2010, there are more than 12800 dentists, conducting 1990+ events to provide dental care, and most of the dental care events are free but a few may ask you to pay, depending on how much you can afford.

The dental professionals count is not limited, and more can join into the program to help the children from low-income families in U.S. to maintain a better dental health. Willing people can also donate to the dental care program to raise the level of care, and help more dentists get involved into this program.

Yellowing of teeth is not uncommon and there are various factors leading to it. However, dental treatments provide many simple solutions to get white glowing teeth in minutes. Although, prevention is always the best cure, one can always achieve a bright smile with the help of teeth whitening. This process usually involves the bleaching of tooth stains with a chemical solution called peroxide. Results can differ from person to person depending on factors such as the condition of the teeth and the amount of discoloration and stains. There are a number of “use at home” solutions and mouthwashes available for teeth whitening but it will be best if you visit your dentist to get professional and long lasting results. Yet, the process of teeth whitening has its own side effects since your teeth are treated chemically. Hence, it is advisable to consult your doctor first and let him decide if it is appropriate for your teeth to undergo whitening.

Cosmetic Edinburgh dentists are specialized dental practitioners, whose specialty concentrates on improving the ‘dental appearance’ of the people who seek their help. This, the cosmetic dentists are able to do in a number of ways. Examples of these include teeth whitening (for those of their patients who might have gotten their teeth stained one way or another), and ‘teeth straightening’ with 6 Month Smiles for those who may either have been born with ‘crooked’ teeth or those whose teeth may have fallen ‘out of order’ with time. The later, dental dentists are able to do using appliances such as dental braces. A person looking for the help of a cosmetic dentist with a missing tooth could have the cosmetic dentist suggest a reasonable replacement, or a way of masking the gap with some sort of dental implants.

Now in days gone by, there used to relatively few specialized cosmetic-dentists. Today, cosmetic dentistry is one of the most popular specialties, with an ever growing need for the services of the cosmetic dentist. More and more people are looking to look good, and will go to any lengths to do so. Of course, in their going to such great lengths, a stop at the cosmetic dentist’s is considered one of the first steps.

As it turns out, a new role is evolving for the cosmetic dentist.

To understand the evolving role of cosmetic-dentists, it would help to first have an appreciation of the fact that we are living in an extremely image conscious society. Today, a person’s worth is more often than not judged by, first and foremost, the appearance of that person. A person could be great in all other ways: great virtue, athletic, hard-working (and whole traditional fare of values), but in as much as they don’t ‘look good,’ they will tend to find winning the acceptance of others a tall order.

All this leads to a situation where many people who don’t ‘look good’ almost inevitably end up with self-esteem issues, thanks to the implicit rejection they get from others. These people of course, by way of taking control of their thoughts, may get a way of building defenses against the rejection they get from other people, on account of their less than perfect looks. They may bring themselves to believe that they don’t need the acceptance of everybody to live a full life (which is true). They may even bring themselves to believe that they can be happy on their own, enjoying their own company (as it is termed). Yet the rejection they get from others, on account of their less than perfect looks still hurts, and impacts on their self-esteem. It tends to be a fact, a reality, and it can’t just be wished away. For these people to truly regain their self-esteem, they need to have their looks improved. And herein comes the evolving role of the cosmetic dentist (and other cosmetic practitioners): repairing the self esteem of people whom the society has refused to accept, on account of their looks.

Traditionally, the role of repairing broken self esteems was the forte of the likes of counselors, psychologists and psychiatrists. In today’s image conscious society, the work of the likes of cosmetic-dentists is getting pulled into the ‘self esteem repair’ bandwagon too. Indeed, repairing broken self esteem is turning into the main role for today’s cosmetic dentists.

Close to 100,000 patients treated at a hospital die each year due to common medical errors. In addition, medical errors also cause increased medical bills, millions of injuries as well as longer recovery times. Many medical errors exist that you need to be aware of, but here is a list of the ten most common medial errors:

Abbreviation Errors
In the medical field, there are lots and lots of abbreviations for all different types of conditions, often caregivers make the mistake of misreading these abbreviations. In addition to other problems caused by this error, patients can be given the wrong medication or improper dosage.

Billing Errors
Some hospitals take the chance that patient do know what they should and should not be billed for and attempt to sneak in extra charges on the bill. They will use fancy medical terms to make ridiculous charges that only confuse the patient. If you do not fully understand each charge on your medical bill, call the billing department at the hospital and have them explain your bill to you in expanded detail.

Equipment Failure
Diagnostic tools and other medical equipment that is not functioning correctly may cause serious injury to the patient, or even death. Such errors can occur with anesthetic machines, heart defibrillators, x-ray machines and more.

Hospital Infections
According to reports by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the neonatal intensive care unit, the burn intensive care unit and the pediatric intensive care unit have the highest rate of infections and occur in an estimated 5% of all hospitalizations for acute care. These infections are nosocomial and are the cause of up to 70,000 deaths each year just in the United States alone.

Incorrect Diagnosis
An incorrect diagnosis, no matter the disease, can lead to poor treatment, or no treatment at all for the actual disease that continues to do harm to the patient. All tests have a chance of producing a false positive. If the doctor relies on just one test, a misdiagnosis of someone who is perfectly healthy may occur.

IV Errors
Research indicates that errors involving medications given intravenously, or through an IV, rank at the top of the list of common medical mistakes. Line problems and incorrect dosage occurs often. Thankfully, now a device is available that is able to prevent such errors. Make sure that the hospital you attend has one.

Medication Errors
Reports from the National Academies indicate that medication errors are one of the most common errors in the medical field. At least 1.5 million patients are harmed each year. The additional medical costs to treat such injuries, just in hospitals alone, adds up to $3.5 million each year.

Patient Falls
When a patient that has problems moving about on their own attempts to get around without help, a fall often occurs. Medication reactions, confusion, balance trouble, sedation and especially an increased patient to medical staff ratio often cause these falls.

Preventable Adverse Reaction To Drugs
Examples of adverse drug reactions, or ADRs, that could be prevented is drug-herbal, drug-diet and drug-drug interactions.

Wrong Site Surgery
Wrong site surgery can occur in several ways that include organ puncture, incorrect incision, unsanitary utensils, surgery on the incorrect organ or delayed/prolonged surgery. This error can happen in all types of surgery from cosmetic surgery to amputation, even during childbirth.

Many people are beginning to understand with probiotics that not all bacteria are bad. In fact, probiotics have been contributing to good health for years. With an increasing demand of probiotics, people are requesting that they be available in forms other than yogurt and oral dietary supplements. Consumers want more choices, since some people are sensitive to certain kinds of processing (i.e. temperature). However, with constantly-improving technology, probiotics are being used in a broader market of goods.

The thought of beneficial bacteria has become more popular with the public, since studies have shown that probiotics can aid the immune system in the fight against the “bad guys”. More and more yogurt brands are boasting probiotics on their labels, and companies are continuing to find ways to implement good bacteria strains into other foods that are not cultured by tradition. This doesn’t necessarily mean a consumer will purchase this product, since a company tried adding probiotics to cheese, and this product didn’t sell too well. This is because a consumer is not generally looking for cheese to add health benefits to a meal; instead, he or she usually uses cheese to add taste to what is being eaten.

Candy and pop, as we all know, are not good for our teeth, especially children’s teeth because they’re not as aware of proper oral hygiene as adults should be. But, did you know that milk and juice sipping throughout the day can cause just as many problems with kid’s teeth as good old candy and pop?

Sometimes children sip all day long on fruit candies or juice. Also, some people need to beware of giving a child a bottle at bedtime. Even if a baby only has a few teeth in the mouth, the teeth are swimming in bacteria, and tooth decay can quickly start. The same rules go for adults: try to brush/floss after snacks, and do not eat and go to bed without brushing.

There are some helpful dental care tips that you can follow, like:

1) Brush a baby’s teeth with a tiny bit of flouride toothpaste as soon as the baby gets its first tooth (usually betweeen 3-9 months). This is to prevent tooth decay by removing bacteria from the teeth.

2) Start taking your kid to a health care provider knowledgeable and skilled in oral health at age 1.

3) Monitor snacks, especially those loaded in sugar. One child I know recently had 17+ cavities because he sipped on fruit juices all day long. The sugar feeds the bad bacteria in the mouth.

4) Take good care if your own teeth, regardless of whether or not you have kids. If you do have children, keep in mind that the bacteria in your mouth is contagious, and it’s possible to spread chronic gum disesase, cavities, and tartar buildup to your children.

There are various food products that help control the bad breath smell that exists in people’s mouths. As we have previously discussed, halitosis is primarily caused by the volatile sulfur compounds (also known as VSCs) like H2S and CH3SH produced in the mouth. Bacteria in the mouth convert proteins into substances cysteine and methionine, and these are metabolized into VSCs. In general, halitosis cures focus on controlling the number of “bad” bacteria in the mouth.

There is a strong relationship between the natural antioxidants of green tea and good health, since it has been shown to have antimicrobial and deodorizing effects. For instance, green tea can encourage strength, energy, and decrease a person’s chance for getting cancer. Methyl mercaptan, as you may have previously read, is one of the foul-smelling volatile sulfur compounds that cause bad breath. Along with other plant extracts, green tea extracts were analyzed with gas chromatography to see how strong their effects were on neutralizing the smell of methyl mercaptan.

Research has shown that green tea extracts can deodorize multiple foul-smelling compounds in a person’s mouth, which can exist there from eating meat, smoking tobacco, and so on.

The components and properties of green tea can help decrease the chances of someone having cavities and gum disease. It helps mimize the effects of bleeding gums by helping the blood in the mouth clot.
